Spring Final Exam

Here is your take home final exam. You may start on it as soon as you like and finish it as soon as you like. For seniors your final is due by midnight Monday June 9th. If you are not a senior then your final is due by midnight on the day of your final -Period 4 June 17th and Period 7 June 18th.

The whole focus of Web 2.0 is based on the notion of collaboration. So here is your opportunity to use a wiki, collaborative software, to step into the world of Web 2.0. You are set up with a partner from another period to construct a wiki explaining Open Source Software. The full requirements that you will be graded on is in the project handout. Go here to download the project.

Social Bookmarking

Using an online social bookmarking service has many benefits. Since as a student you are at many different computers throughout the week, having your bookmarks in one place online is a bonus. As a learner you also want to build your personal learning network. This is were the social part of “social bookmarking” coming into play. You are able to build a personal learning network easily by adding people of similar interests to your network.

We will be using a service called del.icio.us. Here are some video tutorials to help you along the way. The video that we watched in class by David Warlick can be found here if you would like to view it again. Jon Udell has a nice screencast to show a nice workflow while using del.icio.us.

Blogs = Converstation. Enter a Water Buffalo???

This video called “4 Generations: The Water Buffalo Movie” shot and produced by Robert Thompson shows one example of what good things can happen when people get together using the internet. In this video documented case, it was a blog in the USA and an American living in China that caused radical change to four generations in one Chinese family. Remember too that your website can be a launching pad for great conversation that can end in good. As you engage in this read/write/connect/reflect web space remember your audience is the world.

As you collaborate on this assignment with your classmates, show how you can watch a video and then deconstruct the story, tracking down all the individual elements. Use the checklist given to you in class to make sure you include all the elements of a good post.

Google Alerts

Google alerts are a good way to track things on the internet by bringing them to your email inbox automatically. One or the ways people use Google alerts is to keep track of when something about them pops up online. Akin to searching for your name, know as a vanity search, Google alerts does a similar thing but sends the results to you without you having to manually do the search every so often. This is also a way for other information you are curious about to just show up in your email inbox.

Set up two Google alerts.
One for the username that you using on class projects.
One for your 20% time subject.
